Celina homes are young, and their water heaters are catching up

Celina grew fast. The Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 estimates put the median home at a 2015 build year, and of about 11,152 housing units, 3,618 went up in 2020 or later and another 3,695 between 2010 and 2019. That is roughly two homes in three under 16 years old. In most Celina neighborhoods the plumbing story is not rotted pipe. It is the first generation of water heaters, fixtures, and rubber parts reaching the end of their lives.

Tank water heaters often wear out somewhere around 8 to 12 years, so many of the builder-installed units in homes from 2010 through 2016 are due or past due. Here is what we hear about most:

  • Popping or rumbling from the tank as sediment builds up on the bottom.
  • Hot water that runs out faster than it used to.
  • A puddle or rust stain at the base of the tank.
  • A relief valve that drips when the heater cycles.

If that sounds like your garage or utility closet, our water heater repair & installation page explains what a repair versus a replacement looks like, and the tankless option is worth a look in a newer home with space on an exterior wall. A maintenance visit on a heater that is only a few years old can push replacement back.

Your water comes from Upper Trinity, not NTMWD

Celina buys treated surface water from the Upper Trinity Regional Water District, drawn from Lake Lewisville and Lake Chapman, and the City notes a state rating of Superior in its water update. Plenty of North Texas plumbing advice assumes the North Texas Municipal Water District, so check the supplier before you apply a neighbor-town tip to your own house.

Supply has been tight. Celina moved to Stage 2 drought restrictions on August 23, 2024, with the system at full capacity and peak-hour demand straining distribution, according to Community Impact. Stage 2 meant watering one day a week and none from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check the City for the current stage before you set a sprinkler schedule.

Rules like that change how a house gets used. More hand-watering and shifted irrigation cycles put extra wear on hose bibs and backflow assemblies, and pressure swings at peak hours can show up as a shower that surges or a relief valve that weeps. Our exterior plumbing repair work covers hose bibs and outdoor lines. For a main break or outage on the City’s side of the meter, the City lists an after-hours water line at (945) 362-9968 on its water page. Everything after the meter is yours, and that is where we come in.

Rollertown and the older core

Celina began in 1879, and in February 1902 the town was moved on rollers about a mile north to meet the railroad, which is how it earned the name Rollertown. The buildings around the square date from about 1910 and 1911, according to the Celina museum. Census figures count 391 homes from the 1940s and 140 from 1939 or earlier, sitting a short drive from subdivisions that opened a few years ago.

Homes that old can have galvanized supply lines that corrode from the inside and cast iron drains that scale and crack. We confirm what you have by looking, then talk through repair versus repiping.

Master-planned communities and the question of who owns the line

Light Farms covers 1,070 acres and about 3,000 homes, with first residents in fall 2013, and its drainage is handled by a municipal utility district. Mustang Lakes runs from small lots to acre-plus estates on a former thoroughbred ranch. Bluewood, Carter Ranch, and Homestead at Ownsby Farms add more. When water shows up in a yard or a drain backs up, the first question is whose line it is. We sort out the part that belongs to you and tell you plainly when it belongs to someone else.

With 3,618 homes built since 2020, many Celina households are also inside the early life of the house. If a builder warranty covers the problem, use it. If it has run out or you want a second opinion, call us.

Gas, sewer, and freezes

Atmos Energy is the primary gas provider for most residents, per the City’s resident resources. The Census counts 6,349 of 10,324 occupied homes on utility gas, 3,442 on electricity, and 411 on bottled or tank gas, so do not assume your water heater is gas. For gas appliances, grills, or a generator, see gas line installation.

Celina is also a freeze town. Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 caused statewide water outages, and on January 23, 2026 North Texas dropped to a low of 13 degrees with frozen pipes reported. Lines in exterior walls and attics split when they freeze, and the flooding often starts at the thaw. Know where your main shutoff is, and call us any hour if a line lets go.

Plumbing questions in Celina

Who supplies Celina's water?

The Upper Trinity Regional Water District, using water from Lake Lewisville and Lake Chapman, per the City of Celina. It is not the North Texas Municipal Water District.

Can I water my lawn any day in Celina?

It depends on the current drought stage. When Celina began Stage 2 restrictions in August 2024, watering was limited to one day a week and not allowed from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check with the City for today's stage.

Who provides gas in Celina?

Atmos Energy serves most residents, and other providers may serve some areas, per the City's resident resources. Many homes are all-electric, so check which fuel your water heater uses before you call.

My Celina home is only about ten years old. Why is the water heater leaking?

Tank water heaters often last roughly 8 to 12 years, so a heater installed when the home was built can reach the end of its life around now. A puddle at the base usually means the tank itself has failed. Call us and we will confirm before you pay for a replacement.

Who do I call about a water main problem on the City's side?

The City lists an after-hours water line at (945) 362-9968 on its water page. For leaks on your side of the meter, call us at (469) 552-2881.
