What water heater work typically costs
Every home is different, so we confirm the price on site before work starts. The ranges below give you a realistic idea of what to expect in Aubrey and the surrounding Denton County communities.
| Job | Typical range | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Water heater repair (thermostat, element, igniter, valve) | $150 to $600 | Part cost and how hard the part is to reach |
| Tank water heater replacement, 40 to 50 gallon | $2,800 to $4,500 installed | Gas or electric, venting, code upgrades, permit |
| Tankless water heater replacement | $4,000 to $7,500 installed | Venting, gas line size, electrical, location |
| Expansion tank (where required) | $150 to $350 | Required on many city-supplied lines |
These ranges are for planning. The price you approve is the written estimate we give you at your home, before any work starts.
How the $79 dispatch fee works
A $79 dispatch fee covers sending a licensed plumber to your home to diagnose the problem and give you an estimate. When you approve the recommended work, the $79 is applied toward your repair total. You see the full price before anything starts.
What pushes a water heater price up or down
- Fuel type. Gas units need venting and a gas connection that meets code. Electric units need the right circuit.
- Size and type. A larger tank or a tankless unit costs more than a standard 40 or 50 gallon tank.
- Where it sits. A garage closet is easier than a tight attic. Moving a heater adds labor.
- Code requirements. Some towns require permits, expansion tanks, sediment traps, or drain pans. Little Elm’s water heater rules are a good example.
- The condition of what is already there. Corroded shutoff valves or old supply lines are replaced while we are in there.
Common add-ons
- New shutoff valves and flexible supply lines
- Expansion tank and relief valve
- Drain pan and pan drain line
- Gas line adjustments or a sediment trap
- Permit handling for your city
What a repair usually involves
Most water heater repairs are one failed part. On an electric heater that is usually a heating element or thermostat. On a gas heater it is often the igniter, thermocouple, gas control valve, or burner assembly. Leaking relief valves and failed drain valves are also common. A repair makes sense when the tank is sound. When the tank itself is leaking, no part can fix it, and the conversation becomes a replacement.
Why planned replacement often costs less than an emergency
If your tank is old and starting to show signs, replacing it on your schedule gives you time to pick the right size and type and to avoid water damage from a tank that gives out. We are open 24 hours and can handle a failure at any hour, but a planned swap is calmer and lets us line up the permit and parts. See our water heater repair and installation page for the warning signs.
Tank versus tankless cost
A tankless water heater costs more up front, mostly because of the venting, gas supply, and electrical work it needs. Our tankless water heater cost guide walks through those numbers.
Questions to ask any plumber before you approve a quote
- Does the price include the permit, the expansion tank, and the drain pan, if your city requires them?
- Does it include hauling away the old unit?
- What warranty comes with the heater, and what warranty comes with the labor?
- Is there a dispatch or service fee, and is it credited toward the repair?
Our answers: permits are handled for you, the $79 dispatch fee is credited toward approved work, and parts and labor carry a 5-year warranty when we supply the parts.
How we keep the price clear
You hear the number before we start, not after. We look at the unit, the connections, and the space, we tell you what the job involves, and we give you one price to approve. If something unexpected turns up once we open things up, we stop and explain it before any extra work is added.
