Toilet trouble in Aubrey: running, leaking, weak flush, or clogged

A toilet is one of the few fixtures every person in the house needs at the same time, so a problem tends to become urgent fast. Vor-Tex Plumbing Co. repairs and replaces toilets in Aubrey and across Denton County as part of our fixture and appliance plumbing work. Call (469) 552-2881. We are open 24 hours.

Start with the symptom

It runs on, or refills by itself

A hissing tank or a toilet that “ghost flushes” every few minutes means water is slipping past the flapper or the fill valve is not closing. You can check the flapper yourself: add a few drops of food coloring to the tank, wait fifteen minutes without flushing, and see whether the color shows up in the bowl. If it does, the flapper is not sealing.

It flushes weakly

A slow, lazy flush is often a partly blocked rim jet, a low tank water level, or a flapper that closes too early. Mineral buildup in the rim holes can do it, and so can a partial clog further down the drain.

It leaks at the base

Water on the floor around the toilet usually means the wax ring or the closet bolts have failed. A toilet that rocks even slightly can break the seal over time. This is a repair that should not sit, because the leak soaks the subfloor.

It leaks from the tank

Drips from the tank-to-bowl bolts, the supply connection, or a cracked tank all look similar from across the room. We trace the water to its source and tell you whether a gasket will fix it or the tank needs replacing.

It clogs often

One clog is a clog. Repeated clogs in a toilet that is not overloaded point to a restriction deeper in the drain, or to an older low-flow design that struggles. Our drain and sewer line cleaning page explains what happens when the problem is in the line instead of the bowl.

Repair or replace the toilet

Repair when the porcelain is sound and the trouble is inside the tank or at the seal. Replace when the bowl or tank is cracked, the toilet is wobbling on a damaged flange, you want a taller or more efficient model, or repairs have started to repeat. We install toilets from brands such as KOHLER and American Standard.

Before you pick one, know your rough-in, which is the distance from the wall to the center of the drain. Twelve inches is the common size, but older homes vary. Round and elongated bowls need different space. We check these measurements on site so the toilet you buy actually fits.

What we do on a replacement

We shut off the supply, empty and remove the old toilet, and inspect the closet flange where it meets the floor. A damaged flange is common and affects how well the new toilet seals. We then set a new wax ring or seal, secure and level the toilet, connect a new supply line, and flush it a few times while you watch the base for any moisture.

Call right away if

  • The bowl is overflowing and the water will not stop. Turn the valve behind the toilet clockwise to shut off the supply.
  • Several drains in the house are slow or gurgling at once.
  • There is a sewage smell, or a floor stain spreading from the toilet.

Why rubber parts wear early on Mustang SUD water

Many Aubrey-area homes get water from Mustang SUD, which blends groundwater with lake water from Upper Trinity Regional Water District. The lake-water share is treated with chloramine, and Mustang’s 2024 water quality report lists the average at 3.16 ppm. Chloramine is safe to drink, but it can attack rubber over time. In practice that means flappers go stiff or warp, and braided supply hoses can turn brittle sooner than you would expect. If your toilet runs on in Aubrey or Cross Roads and the flapper is only a few years old, this is a likely reason. We replace the flapper and supply hose together so you are not back in a year. If you want to know what is in your own tap water, ask about water quality testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my toilet keep running?

A toilet that runs on is almost always a worn flapper, a flapper chain that is too tight or too loose, or a fill valve that no longer shuts off. These are inexpensive parts, and we can usually diagnose which one on the first look.

How can I tell if my toilet is leaking at the base?

Look for water on the floor around the base, a toilet that rocks, or a floor that is soft or stained near it. A failed wax ring is a common cause. Do not wait on this one, because the water gets into the subfloor.

Does chloramine in the water damage toilets?

Chloramine is a disinfectant used by many North Texas water suppliers. It can wear down rubber parts such as flappers and supply hoses faster over time. Replacing those parts is routine, and we can swap them during a visit.

My toilet is clogged and I cannot clear it. What should I do?

Stop flushing, since the bowl can overflow. If a plunger does not work, or more than one fixture is backing up, the problem may be in the drain line. See our drain and sewer line cleaning page and call us.

What does the $79 dispatch fee cover?

It covers sending a licensed plumber to your home to look at the toilet and give you an up-front estimate. When you approve the recommended work, the $79 is applied toward your repair total.

Is the work under warranty?

We provide a 5-year warranty on parts and labor when we supply the parts. Ask about the details when you call (469) 552-2881.
